The Descartes Method of Doubt Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Descartes Method of Doubt - Essay Example Though Descartes' perspectives can be viewed as abstract, the drive to look for information and to demonstrate various ideas had been perceived identified with question (Gillespie 761). Descartes way of looking for information was relating to the logical technique which begins with an issue. His logical inquiries began with question, yet not with self-question. He expressed that thoughts that had been reflected from his brain were introduced and basically expressed without bias. At that point the inquiries were isolated into explicit inquiries that can be unmistakably replied. The intelligent procedure was then applied to each question based on trouble or the preset request. Upon the fulfillment of explicit thoughts, the summed up sees were then accomplished (Williams 18). Descartes trust on intelligent idea is the main guideline where he based the resulting sees (Gillespie 761). In his First Meditations, he raised justification for questioning convictions in ordinary presence. Ins tances of the contentions introduced by Descartes are lunacy and God contentions which raised questions on restricting gatherings of adherents (Broughton 1). During the time spent raising questions, his principle objective is to accomplish total sureness. What's more, he centered around the technique for request since he accepted that if questions on the strategy for looking for information were dispensed with, assurance can be accomplished (Broughton 1). In Descartes’ Discourse, he introduced the Method of Doubt as the technique utilized in the examination of the establishments of theory (Broughton 1). The use of the said however was not restricted to reasoning since he likewise utilized the strategy in scientific examination and questions (p. 5). His perspectives imply that information ought to be qu estionable and it should come up short on any type of uncertainty. So far as that is concerned, he raised questions and vulnerability to be replied and to be killed (Broughton 7-8). His fundamental point at that point is to accomplish ideas that can't be questioned and discredited. Descartes’ suspicion is another purpose of the question as a result of his view on raising uncertainty and the utilization of distrust in logical and philosophical requests. In light of his view however, his aims of demonstrating information by raising questions and incredulity were not on the grounds that he was a doubter. In view of the explores on the Method of Doubt by Descartes, the suspicion can be considered as a positive component since it can make researchers face the questions related with the journey for information. Rather than moving ceaselessly from the questions, they were handled head-on and settled (Perin 52). End The Method of Doubt by Descartes had contributed fundamentally to th e technique for logical, numerical and philosophical request and exploration in the cutting edge period. Being a cynic or not had been a significant component in Descartes accomplishments into turning into the Father of Modern Philosophy.

English Coursework: Macbeth Essay -- English Literature

English Coursework: Macbeth In this exposition I will examine who is answerable for the demise of Ruler Duncan In Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’. The fundamental character in the play, Macbeth, murders King Duncan. Be that as it may, I feel that he was not absolutely to fault. I accept that both Lady Macbeth and the three witches had an influence in his demise and this ought not be neglected. The three witches are for the most part sisters. We initially meet the witches in the absolute first scene of the play when they are on the heath throwing a spell. Shakespeare sets the temperament of the play by having them on the moor in the thunder and helping. This makes a sentiment of wickedness. This is the place the witches first notice Macbeth. Where the spot? Upon the heath. There to meet Macbeth. The witches initially meet Macbeth in scene three of act one when he is riding home in the wake of being one of the saints in the war. He is with Banquo when he knocks in to the three appalling sisters. Macbeth is stunned to hear the witches’ prediction. They predict that he will be the Thane of Cawdor and will proceed to be King. All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be King from now on. This dazes Macbeth since he realizes that the Thane of Cawdor is still alive. He doesn’t see how he will become King of Scotland either. He needs to know more from the witches. Remain, you defective speakers, disclose to me more: By Sinel’s demise I realize I am Thane of Glamis; Be that as it may, how of Cawdor? the Thane of Cawdor still lives, A prosperous man of his word; and to be above all else, Stands not inside the possibility of conviction, The witches’ prediction has placed turning out to be ruler into Macbeths mind. He begins to consider it and how it can turn out to be valid. By th... ... Act 1 Scene 7. In any case, his better half powers him to carry out the thing by saying that she will leave him on the off chance that he doesn't murder him. So that shows that he would not have done it except if his better half (Lady Macbeth) had taken steps to leave him. He at that point slaughters the lord yet it is totally considered by his significant other so that he won't get captured. Indicating that it is that spouse that needs it to happen more than Macbeth does. Taking everything into account I might want to state that I imagine that woman Macbeth is at most issue since Macbeth would not have done it if Lady Macbeth had not of constrained him. Yet, the facts confirm that she would not have the thought except if Macbeth had heard it from the witches. I don’t feel that Macbeth is at any fault in light of the fact that as I have said he would not have done it except if his significant other had constrained him. I additionally feel that the passing of King Duncan was half Lady Macbeth’s flaw and a large portion of the witches.

Planning Ahead How to Prepare for your MD Interviews

1. Have an idea of your preferences before you go in interviews After all of the essays, tests, and letter requests, one of the most exciting parts of the medical school application journey is the interview. This is your chance to show who you are as a person, as well as get the measure of each particular school. I’ve written before about how to prepare yourself for the interview, but I think it’s equally important to realize how to use the interview day effectively to set yourself up best to make medical school decisions down the line. 1. Have an idea of your preferences before you go in interviews There are plenty of great medical schools, but several of them emphasize different parts of a medical education. As I’ve talked about in prior posts, it’s important to learn what matters to you and which medical schools share your priorities. There are also several external factors to consider: geography, finances, and important extracurricular activities. As you start the application season, try to group your list into 3 different categories based on your preferences (very likely to attend, moderately likely to attend, and less likely to attend). The interview process can definitely sway these opinions, but it can be important to keep this list in mind as you start to schedule interviews. If two schools have a conflicting interview date and you can only pick one, having an idea of where those schools stand in your overall list is important. Also, if possible, it is nice to be able to schedule your first interview at a school that isn’t necessarily your top choic e, to start to ease your way into interviews. 2. Identify what is important to you on your interview day Even though it feels like your interview day should be about conveying your unique traits, it’s a missed opportunity if you don’t find the unique traits of the school that resonate with you. Pay attention to things like housing, financial aid, and extracurricular opportunities. Although these seem far away now, they will be the most important things when you actually enter medical school. It’s less important to remember all the specific details about how schools do their loans and scholarships, and more important to know where you can go back and look at that information later. Make a list of important questions or facts that came up during your interview day so that you can look them up later (see below). Also, ask medical students for their honest opinion about the school’s support, workload, and social community -- they remember making the decision and will be able to give you the most relevant information. If a student or a speaker mentions programs or resources that are of particular interest to you, make sure to write it down - you’re almost guaranteed to forget it by the end of the day. 3. Research the school after your interview Interview days are long and info-packed, and usually afterwards everyone is exhausted and looks forward to some time off. Definitely enjoy your well-earned relaxation, but try to dedicate some time to researching the school you just interviewed at while it’s fresh in your mind. Find a way to organize your school information -- some people like to create spreadsheets, others take notes on their phone, and some will handwrite thoughts in a journal. Either way, set up a system so that you can take notes, remember questions, and keep specific information in mind about each school at which you interview. Take the time to go on the school website and try to find the answers to questions that came up on your interview day, and write down those answers so you know what was important to you later. Definitely note down important contacts - your interviewer, tour guide, student host, or whomever else at the school might be helpful to chat with later on down the line. Focusing on the information gathering aspect of interview days might help take some pressure off of the performance aspect, and is a crucial part of the medical application. The more you learn about a school during the interview day, the more you can learn about your interests and priorities, and the more you can prioritize programs that fit your personality. Don’t forget that this process is about you! Good luck! Fall of Lehman Brothers The fall down of the Lehman Brothers is one of the most unpredictable and adverse consequences of the global financial crisis. When on 15 September 2008, the company submitted for relief under Bankruptcy Code (Chapter 11). The journey of 158 years comes to end, started from Two cotton brokers in Montgomery, Ala established the bank in 1850, then steadily developed and after civil war Lehman banks headquarters shifted to New York City with a new name Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and gripe over the globe facilitating regional headquarters mainly in Tokyo and London. In the life of 158 years, the Lehman Holdings Inc. provided quality services in financial market in different sectors investment, private banking, equity, research, fixed-income sales, management and private equity. It was the fourth largest US investment bank with a record of over 158 years and a perennial credit rating of A or above. Every body shocked when they heard such news a bank of these standings collap sed overnight, taking with it the loss of the market liquidity. On September 15, 2008 Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. including Lehman Holdings and its subsidiaries commence Chapter 11 bankruptcy at US Court of Southern District New York with the loss of roughly $768 billion and assets worth around $639 billion, become biggest bankruptcy in US history. Condition of foreign subsidiary/branches/establishment Sixteen Distributing Banks of Lehman Brothers Minibonds announce that they are offering investors a scheme for the repurchase of Minibonds. The bankruptcy of Lehman wounded its foreign subsidiaries such as UKs subsidiary with the PricewaterhouseCoopers, Lehman Brothers International (Europe), Lehman Holdings principal European broker-dealer. Moreover, two Japanese subsidiaries of Lehman Holdings submitted bankruptcy in District Court of Tokyo for  ¥4 trillion ($38 billion) in mutual liabilities, this is considered as the countrys second-largest crumple since World War II. It is also created a tragedy in UK Lehman employees about 5000 were jobless. Such conditions created throbbing and impious ambiance for public in terms of creating anxiety, unemployment, inflation that can cause obstacle in way of life. Methodology The literature can be identified a variety of research methodologies that are used (interview, questionnaire, survey of annual reports, focus groups) to evaluate intellectual capital. Interviews and questionnaires were often used to supplement each other. Given this background I projected to use a triangulated approach drawing on qualitative and quantitative research methods. The ultimate objective could be a qualitative score or index that can be manipulated, however the process of building the index would require that components of intellectual capital be measured and valued and this is often a highly subjective exercise requiring input from several diverse perspectives. The steps that would be taken would include a series of qualitative interviews to identify the components of intellectual capital that are applicable to financial firm. Using the information provided from the interviews together with indicators develop a set of constructs that would be incorporated into a ques tionnaire using a point scale. This questionnaire that would be used to evaluate intellectual capital would consist of statements that intend to operationally and reflect the constructs mentioned. In addition, these statements would be weighted according to their importance and relevance for optimizing the value creating activities in the financial corporations. This questionnaire would be piloted, refined and administered. The data would be recoded to reflect scores and indices using some form of weighting according to their relative importance. The proposed indices would be presented to a range of stakeholders for comments and refinement. Data from the Lehman Brothers on organizational performance both financial and operational would be collected. The data on performance measures would be cross-referenced to data from a number of financial agencies for establishing benchmarks. Also, data collected from a strong/healthy foreign branch/establishment to find out indifferent str uctural framework, policy if they do carried to way-out to rescue future occurrence. Purpose of Study is qualitative and quantitative falling in both categories exploratory and descriptive study because some issue like intellectual-capital-relationship in financial firms has no available information on how similar problems or research issue had been solved in the past? and also descriptive nature because of quantitative data measurement i.e. financial-business-performance. Type of Investigation this is co-relational study because multiple factors that influence one and other the problem in a chainlike fashion. Therefore it is require identifying crucial factors, which are associated with the problem. Study Setting as described above the study is co-relational therefore study can be done in natural environment where the works precede normally as field study so this is non-contrived setting. The concern is that our unit of analysis is no more exist and had bankrupt. Unit o f analysis refer to the level of aggregation of the data collected during the subsequent data analysis stage. The research main unit of analysis is organization (such as to examine organizational performance as a whole), Secondly the individual (to analyze intellectual capital) and minor the group the division (to cope with cultural and foreign branches/establishment). Time Horizon of our research is can be cross-sectional in determining performance perspectives, and longitudinal in subject of studying people behavior. Conclusion The contribution that this research should make to extract literature to resist, control and limit expansion/ further financial disaster for developed and developing countries in term of maintaining respected economy of their country and way-out to rescue strong foreign branches from catastrophe to limit financial crisis with countrys boundary to prolong and save the allure/benefits of globalization for to maintain confidence of future potential investor and financial corporations. Additionally, this research finding should also assist them in their recruiting of personnel, acquisition of fixed assets and deployment of other resources to ensure that they are competitive and ensure secure ways to do business. This research should also contribute to the extant literature by providing a model for evaluating intellectual capital in the financial industry as well as on the appropriate mix of people, technology and physical assets in the organisation.

Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda free essay sample

I’ve been home from school for an hour, relaxing and trying to relieve my brain of the beating it just took from the eighth grade curriculum. Although nothing of great importance has transpired between my father and I since I’ve been home, something has just crossed his mind and has sparked a need for an urgent and imperative discussion with me. I wait before his intimidating frame and finally hear him deliver that perpetual maxim I’ve grown to hate: â€Å"Don’t be a coulda-woulda-shoulda!†. These unprompted instructions from my father had become a staple in my life for the past couple of years, and I was finally beginning to understand his logic: He saw potential for success in me, and he wanted me to know it. Although I knew his intentions, I didn’t quite know how to go about enacting this principal in my own life. Not succumbing to â€Å"coulda-shoulda-woulda† status appeared to me as doing the best I could possibly do in all aspec ts of my life, a foreign concept for an impulsive 13 year old. We will write a custom essay sample on Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Sacrificing my boyhood doing school work and bettering my musicianship and athletic performance seemed difficult. This time utilized playing endless hours of video games or aimlessly going to McDonald’s with my friends seemed more important to me. But what my father made me understand was that taking pride in my passions and investing complete and undivided effort into them, especially in this important maturation period, was an important aspect of life. He did not want me to regret later on in my life what might have happened if I changed my actions. Through my dad’s teachings, I began to apply his concept in all facets of my being. His words created a mindset in me that success did not come without sacrifice, and I tried to emulate it. Through completing extra problems to understand a concept in math, utilizing my lunch period to practice a new piece that I couldn’t play well, or skipping a team get-together to work on my quickness, I began developing a new s et of personality traits that would change my entire outlook on life. The responsibility that comes along with sacrifice, the dedication that came along with extended investment of time to reach a goal, and the pride attained when the goal is completed all contributed to my new attitude. The characteristics gained through my father’s influence are a part of me that will be forever present. I now know for sure that there is nothing I could have, should have, or would have done to better myself as a person in my life. Perhaps the greatest impact of his words is the insight I now have on these concepts that I can impart to others, such as my siblings and friends. The similar values we share regarding responsibility and work ethic make for strong, enjoyable relationships. As a result of this, my father’s impact goes far beyond the influence he had on my life. Without his guidance, I’d be meandering to McDonald’s right about now.

The Catcher In The Rye - Foreshadowing Essays - Literary Realism

The Catcher in the Rye - Foreshadowing The use of forshadowing in a novel can help it's reader get a sense of what is to come in the story without giving away the events themselves. It is a powerful tool which prevents events from being left unexplained, leaving the reader question the effectivness of an outcome. The eventual breakdown of the character Holden Caufield in J.D. Salinger's controversial 1945 novel "The Catcher in the Rye" was foreshadowed in the early chapters of the book. The first clue is his negative approach to life. He begins by talking about his "lousy childhood" (p.1) and the first traces of profanity can be seen scattered about the page in the form of "crap", "hell" and "goddam". Holden's first sign of distrust comes when he speaks to Ward Stradlater about his date with Jane Gallagher: "Listen. Give my regards, willya?" "Okay," Stradlater said, but I knew he probably wouldn't... "Ask her if she still keeps all her kings in the back row." "Okay," Stradlater said, but I knew he wouldn't. (p.33-34) This is seen again when he doesn't trust Stradlater to stop his advances of Jane in the case that she says no. Holden gives up his faith in people to trust him when he boards a bus holding a snowball. The driver refuses to believe that Holden won't throw the snowball so he draws the conclusion that "People never believe you." (p.37). He is also always placing labels upon people as being "phonies" which gives the reader the idea that Holden thinks that others are materialistic. Holdens attempts to protect the innocence in the world is another early sign of his deteriorating state. When Holden goes to Pheobe's school to deliver his note he sees some swearing of the wall which he says "drove me damn near crazy" (p.201). He wipes the words from the wall in an attempt to prevent the inevitable from occuring, leading the reader to believe that he may experience some mental unstability in the future. Eventually he comes to the realization that he can't rub all the profanity away himself. Another example of Holden's attempt to shelter innocence is the fact that he never does call Jane, possibly for fear that she will scar his memories of her as an innocent child. The title of this novel presents this theme to the reader in that Holden wants to be "the catcher in the rye" (p. ) so he can catch all of the children that sway to close to the edge of a cliff in thier play. Perhaps the most obvious example of foreshadowing in the novel occurs when his parents come close to having him "phsycoanalyzed and all" (p.39) when he breaks all the windows in the garage. Throughout the novel he refers to himself as "a madman" (p.79) which gives the reader the idea that he sees himself as having a sort of mental problem. These two peices of evidence alone present a fairly firm idea of what will happen to Holden towards the end of the story. The use of foreshadowing is evident in the novel "The Catcher in the Rye". It does it's job well in that it foretells the outcome of Holdens many problems and gives reason for it. The eventual breakdown of Holden is not startling to the reader because of the authors use of foreshadowing and therefore it is effective.

Apes essays

Apes essays In ordinary life, animals arent given human like characteristics. In Planet of the Apes, by William T. Quick, the apes are personified as humans in many ways. First, the apes are able to walk on two legs. Another way they are humanized is because the apes have a well-rounded army. Lastly, the apes have feelings and sympathy. These are some of the many ways that the apes are characterized as humans. One way the apes are human like is that they walk on two feet. When Davidson (the protagonist) crashes on a mysterious planet, he finds himself in the midst of a stampede of what appears to be humans, who are being pursued by what appear to be apes, who are running on two feet. After this he is then caught and then put into jail or some sort of slave type establishment. In this jail, apes, outside the jail bars, surround him. They all are walking on two feet. Another way is that apes have an army. The army is lead by General Thade, and his second hand man, Attar. They do not salute in this army; they hit each others chests. They have specific commands as like any other army in the world. Some commands listed in the novel were, Send the 1st line, March, and finally About face. The last way I said they were human like was that all of the apes had feelings, and some of the apes felt sympathy. Krull, the ape who was in cahoots with Davidson, must of felt sorry for him and his kind, because he was helping him rebel against the all of the other sadistically minded apes. Both Krull and Ari, an ape that was attracted to Davidson since they met, felt sympathy towards the human race on this strange planet. This novel has apes personified, as humans in many ways. Like walking, having an army, and feeling and having sympathy. All of these characteristics the apes have are very abnormal and unheard of for animals. ...

David Cole Interviews Dr. Franciszek Piper Essay

David Cole Interviews Dr. Franciszek Piper - Essay Example Piper says that the gas chamber in question was in fact modified, as it was a gas chamber but later turned into an air-raid shelter. This is the cause for the building of new walls, a new door and the removal of the holes in the ceiling. The question remains as to why these changes in the gas chamber are hidden from the public when in the past, this story was punishable and punished by the law. In the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau, there are little traces of Zyklon-B residues, which were found by two separate tests. Both found that only one gas chamber had traces of Zyklon-B gas, the delousing chamber that was off the charts, while the remainder of the chambers in question, which were the homicidal ones, did not. When Cole asked Dr. Piper about this, Dr. Piper claimed that the delousing chamber was used â€Å"day and night† whereas the homicidal chambers were used â€Å"20, 30 minutes a day.† claims were made that Zyklon-B was primarily used for disinfection, which is odd considering the desire of the Nazis that these encamped people be destroyed, their health status unimportant. Another story that is in question is the human soap question submitted by a sample of human soap by the Soviets during the Nuremberg trials. Dr. Piper still believes this story, although there is no proof to support it. David Cole has successfully proved that genuine artifacts have been reconstructed to appear real to unsuspecting visitors. This Soviet deception was propagandized because of the lack of trust and allied support of the Soviet Union with the other Allied Forces of the time. This propaganda on all sides was only able to become ‘truth’ because of the victory of the Allies over Nazi Germany.

Comparison of Early American Literature Essay Example for Free

Comparison of Early American Literature Essay The two selections Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford and The General History of Virginia by John Smith are some of the earlier pieces of American literature. Although they were both written in the same time period the style and attitudes vary greatly. William Bradford had a very direct form of writing; commonly known as plain puritan style, whereas, John Smith had a somewhat confusing, more elaborate, writing style. Bradfords piece also seemed more accurate than John Smiths account. For example, John Smith wrote of his capture by three hundred bowmen, conducted by the king of Pamunkee which seems more than a little exaggerated. After all, it generally doesnt take three hundred men to capture one. Smith exaggerated many times in order to boast about himself. There are many times when he refers to his greatness. In the following quote he boasts of his leadership skills and compassion for his fellow men while belittling his superiors: The new President and Martin, being little beloved, of weak judgment in dangers, and less industry in peace, committed the managing of all things abroad to Captain Smith, who, by his own example, good words, and fair promises, set some to mow, others to bind thatch, some to build houses, others to thatch them, himself always bearing the greatest task for his own share, so that in short time her provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himself William Bradford, on the other hand, boasts about his colony: there was but six or seven sound persons who to their great commendations, be it spoken, spared no pains night or day, but with abundance of toil and hard of their own health, fetched them wood, made them fires, dressed them meat, made their beds, washed their loathsome clothes, clothed and unclothed them. Bradford and Smith, both leaders of their colonies, wrote of their hardships in the new world. Despite these similarities the way they acted was very different. When John Smith writes about the Native Americans he refers to them as savages and barbarians. He even calls Pocahontas, the girl who saved his life, a young wench. Bradford writes of the Native Americans as  human beings. He even had a peace treaty with them that lasted twenty-four years. They also had different motifs for writing, which may contribute to the many differences. Smith wrote his selection to encourage people to come to America to find excitement and adventure. Bradford simply wanted to inform the readers of what the lives of colonists was really like. As different are their writing styles, motifs, and views these two men share some common ground, one being they are some of the earliest works of American Literature. So no matter how different or alike Smith and Bradfords writings are, History of Virginia and Of Plymouth Plantation will always be remembered as great American literature.

Education †school Essay

Education is a topic that has been implemented on our generation more than ever before. However, it is not for the grades, degree or the income that education should be important to us. It is for the sake of learning and developing our character that education should be valued. When people go to school, they receive education and thus become educated, however, these people must keep in mind that a major portion of the world receives no form of formal education. Due to their good fortune, the educated people have responsibilities to the world. The first responsibility of an educated person is to help educate others. This may come in the form of teaching classes, tutoring, helping others or simply correcting errors. When we teach people we spread the value of education and share skills that are essential for survival. Other people are able to think rationally and evolve into a self dependent person through the knowledge they attain. Once people are educated, they are able to prevent others from taking advantage of them or cheating them. Through education, people are also able to use the resources they own efficiently and sparingly. Finally, education allows people from different nationalities and locations to communicate and work together in a beneficial harmony. The second responsibility of an educated person is to aim to advance to a better future. It is through evolution that we have become more intellectual and learned. For this process to be beneficial and continuous, we must use it and upgrade it through our use. In the past, communication was a problematic process, today; we have e-mail accounts, cell phones, chat sites, video chat sites and messengers for instant communication. Presently, global warming and oil depletion are major complications. If we are able to advance and address this problem, we would be using our education beneficially. There would be less violence over oil and the future would be a less worrisome place if global warming was tackled. However, this is just one amongst the billions of changes we could make, all to create a better future. The third responsibility of an educated person is to create or maintain stability and order in the world. Through stability and order, the world  becomes a much safer place where people share respect for each other and live in harmony. When there is order, people are insured of payments for their services. They are motivated to work-hard and use positive, instead of negative means to earn their income. Thus, through stability and order, ethics can also be implemented into people. Thus, the three main responsibilities of an educated person are to educate others, aim for a better future and create as well as maintain stability in the world. Through these goals, the world becomes a positive place and continues to flourish after each generation.
